Abstract
Notation software is used for creating sheet music. The most common elements and possibilities of any notation software is the ability to enter notes, to edit these notes, to listen to the notation and print it out. This thesis describes how to create music with a notation software by using the example of MuseScore, currently the most popular free notation program. Following that are descriptions of fifteen different notation programs, divided into two groups – graphic and text-based. The software was described using the following: the different possibilities the programs had when it came to creating music notation (eg. the available clefs and time signatures, accidentals and dynamic markings; adding lyrics to the score), the possibilities for editing the notation (time signature changes, key changes, transposing the score, part extraction), the file formats the programs could import and export, and system requirements.
