Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to compare and analyse three different relational database management systems from a novice user’s point of view. These three systems are chosen from the DB-Engine’s relational DBMS popularity ranking and include Oracle Database 11g Standard Edition, Microsoft SQL Server 2012 and Sybase SQL Anywhere 12. For the analysis of the DBMSs a sample assignment was created together with nine different rating criteria. The goal of the assignment was to create a small database, similar to a one of a small business and perform all the tasks described in the declaration of the rating system. The criteria included the rating of the availability of the DBMS, documentation, ease of use, learning curve, the creation of a database, data management, user management, security (backup and recovery only), the support for operating systems and some other functionalities. Unfortunately, this thesis will not be published because all the vendors of those three systems have stated in their licence agreements that no one is allowed to disclose the results of any program benchmark tests without their prior consent. So this document consists of only abstracts of the paper both in Estonian and in English as well as a non-exclusive licence for not publishing the whole thesis.
