Abstract
Hackathons are growing in popularity over the past few years drawing the attention of researchers in order to learn more about them. Research before has focused on hacka-thons organizational side, on how to get more participants to the events and the outcomes of a hackathon has been researched on a very small basis of up to 10 projects per study. This paper focuses on collegiate hackathons where the participants are students by look-ing at what happens to the hackathons and what could be the factors that influence a pro-ject’s continuation after the hackathon on a large basis with over 60 000 projects. It is identified that not all the projects produce something tangible after the hackathon but there are projects that produce value to the community. The importance of winning is the only factor found to significantly influence project’s continuation after the hackathon.
