Abstract
Women’s participation in the information and communications technology sector remains modest, while their increased participation would benefit the sector as a whole and it would also benefit women themselves. To increase women’s participation, it is important to deliberately engage girls in computer science education. This thesis aims to develop recommendations for increasing girls’ participation in computer science education. To achieve the objective and answer the research questions, in the thesis previous literature is analysed and a survey is conducted among girls, who are studying and who are not studying computer science in upper secondary school. As a result of the research, activities are outlined for two target groups – girls who have not chosen a computer science-related field of study in upper secondary school and girls who have already chosen a computer science-related field of study in upper secondary school. Based on the reasons for non-participation in computer science subjects, for girls who have not chosen computer science, it is important to generate initial interest and first contact. For girls who have chosen to study computer science subjects, it is important to create a suitable learning environment and to increase self-confidence.
