Abstract
The aim of the present thesis was to create the Estonian R&D statistics visualization environment TeadusSilm. Statistics reports were created with Power BI software and embedded in the website of the Estonian Research Information System. The reports are based on data that is imported into the Power BI workspace with Excel files and from a data warehouse created specifically for TeadusSilm. After each project life cycle, unstructured user interviews and usability testing were conducted using a concurrent think-aloud methodology.
The theoretical part of the thesis described how to visualize data most effectively and what is the added value of data visualization. The reports were created based on the recommendation not to be afraid of “simple” solutions, and a lot of attention was paid to reducing data noise and user feedback. TeadusSilm offers a centralized, systematic and consistent overview of the current state of the Estonian R&D and will provide a tool for making data driven decisions in the future.
