Abstract
Choosing the right software for digitization can be quite complex. The complexity lies in the fact that an organization needs an informed employee who can identify, analyse, and document software requirements, communicate with software providers, and be involved throughout the software development and implementation process. Furthermore, the selection process is further complicated by the fact that there is a wide range of off-the-shelf software products available for adoption, but there are also many service providers who are willing to create tailor made software.
The main objective of this study is to provide organizations with guidelines on what to consider, when making a choice between off-the-shelf and tailor-made software. The thesis describes and analyses the process of documenting requirements, communicating with software providers, and providing a final recommendation for purchasing a software based on the case of one organization. The analysed organization is the Estonian Human Resource Management Association (PARE), which faces the challenge of manually handling numerous processes that could be automated with software.
