Coding-based protocols for autonomous vehicles

Abstract
The progress in the practical using of autonomous vehicles strongly depends on efficient and reliable communication infrastructure. The self-driving objects have to communicate with each other and with control systems in order to avoid traffic incidents and to provide efficient functioning. Enormous load on communication channels requires developing dedicated wireless networks. Asynchronous random access to the channels leads to packet losses and, consequently, requires retransmission of the data. Due to strict restrictions on the delay, retransmission-based systems are not efficient in this scenario. Instead, an additional redundancy in the transmitted data is introduced and the lost data packets can be recovered from other received packets. To implement this approach, we need a joint solution for erasure-correcting coding and for random access protocol.
