Integration of smart environment ontology with IoT devices

Abstract
The major focus of the ontology for the intelligent environment and the IoT devices is on the modeling, including the presentation of device location, capability sets, technology-specific features, interfaces, device configurations, etc. DogOnt is one of the ontologies available in the market that helps the solution developer to model and compose the surrounding smart environment. Microsoft's Digital Twin Definition Language (DTDL) is another modeling language that allows solution developers to represent physical entities (such as rooms, factories, shipping containers, etc.) in a digital world.

In this internship, the student will mainly focus on DogOnt. DogOnt provides hundreds of classes, e.g. Fan, Sofa, Furniture, CO2 sensors, DoorSensors, humidity sensors, and many more. On the other hand, in an IoT environment, e.g. a smart building, there are thousands of sensors deployed. Whenever one needs to query the value or state of the sensor, they need to refer to the device ID or the API given by the provider, raising the interoperability/vendor lock-in issue. Usually, the actual IoT devices are not mapped/integrated with any standard ontology. For instance, how would you integrate the CO2 sensor in the local network with the CO2Sensor class in DogOnt ontology? One of the possible approaches could be writing the right set of server-side rules (scripts) that will make this integration.

This thesis will focus on finding a solution to address the above integration issue.
