Dark web market of compromised Estonian machines
Organization
Cybercrime
Abstract
Today cybercrime has evolved into a well organized activity, wherein stolen data and access to compromised assets is sold or rented out to interested parties. The goal of this work is to study the cybercrime ecosystem, specifically concentrating on services that provide access to compromised devices, with a special focus on compromised computers and smartphones used by users in Estonia.
Potential research questions:
- What are the most popular services and where are they advertised?
- What are the business models that are employed by these services?
- What level of access to the compromised system is provided by these services?
- What means have been used to compromise the devices?
- What would be the lower-bound estimate of compromised devices in Estonia?
The work involves studying existing literature and possibly communicating with service operators via dark web cybercrime forums. Engaging in financial transactions, however, would require research ethics committee review.
