Energy saving codes for storage devices

Abstract
Data in storage systems are protected by erasure-correcting codes. In huge storage system with thousands of drives, some drives can be switched off (idle) for saving energy. However, if the information from these drives is requested, then switching the drive on leads to additional delays and energy consumption. If correcting of multiple erasures would be very simple, we could interpret temporarily idle drives as erasures and recover the requested data without switching the drive on. The very new, challenging, and important problem is to develop new codes with extremely simple encoding and decoding for usage in this application
