The Hidden Cost of Software Updates: Measuring the Impact of Feature Changes on Software Energy Consumption

Organization
Software Engineering Analytics
Abstract
Software updates often introduce new features, bug fixes, or performance improvements, but their effect in terms of energy consumption is largely overlooked. This thesis will investigate how specific feature updates—such as UI/UX changes, algorithm optimizations, and background processes—affect energy consumption on user devices. Students take software-based energy measurements in controlled experiments on software across multiple platforms (e.g., mobile, desktop). The goal is to identify patterns where updates consistently increase or reduce energy consumption, providing guidelines for developers to consider energy impact during the feature design and update process. The exact details of the thesis topic depend on the student's previous knowledge and interests.
